bread, wonderful bread

don't you just love bread? for me, there's nothing like hot bread or rolls right out of the oven, slathered with a hunk of real butter. of course, in julie king lingo bread can mean donuts, croissants, bagels, scones, pizza dough, bread sticks, and on and on. as i've told you here, i grew up baking with my grandma j and my mom is a wonderful cook and baker as well. mom made sure we had dessert for dinner every day. to this day, i like to have something sweet after i eat a meal.

which brings me to the ban i've put on bread. i've reached my all-time high lifetime weight and my percent of body fat number is very sad. hubbie and i joined a fitness club this week and i am determined to eat right and shed some of these pounds. i sure did enjoy putting them on but now i'll just have to work hard to take them off.

i took the photos above thru the windows of a couple of shops in the dayton area. the bagels cooling and the pizza dough rising were so nostalgic to me. i just had to snap their photos. bread, wonderful bread, i will miss you!

Julie, I too feel that bread is a wonderful thing. I went a little over a year without bread back in the mid-90's. I lost lots of weight. I felt good, but I will admit I felt deprived. I sure need to stop eating it also, but it tastes so good. If only I would learn moderation. I was just thinking of buying a bread machine. Now you are making me have second thoughts. My favorite is probably yeast rolls. Nice and fluffy yeasty rolls. yum

My daddy ran a bakery as I was growing up... we would walk across the street some evenings when he had just taken French bread out of the oven. My sis and I would split it in half... mmmm... the memories. I can still smell it! And taste the hot doughy goodness! But yes, I agree, bread can be an evil lil' beast that takes over my body! Good luck with your fitness endeavors. I'm about at the end of my rope, too! I've got to do something drastic - and soon!

You know, cyber bread doesn't have any calories! :)

And I totally agree that it HAS to be real butter!

Oh bread---my weakness---you made me hungry!

My favorite is a crusty sourdough or a hearty wheat bread. I detest the garden variety of store bought white bread. And yes, I agree real butter makes everything better. And fatter. I need to join you and hubby.

Bread is my weakness! My husband makes the best ever rolls and pizza from scratch...just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Oh, Trish, I just saw your comment. I LOVE my bread machine. I make all kinds of stuff in it. Even pizza dough.

It starts early in life...my aunt had a bakery and we could go in the back and take what we wanted...that memory is hard to shake. I'm trying moderation and exercise..Good luck with your new program...exercise is key!

oh dear, going cold turkey off of all bread could be tough. what about moderation? i always thinks it's the best way to succeed. good luck either way, you can do it!

I'm also trying to start eating better and, darn it, the bread family has to be the first to go. I like your idea of taking photographs of the beautiful loaves. We can admire their beauty even if the taste is deferred.

Good luck with this. I've been on a self imposed sugar/carb restriction and exercize workout since the end of April. Not much change yet. Some, but not much, so don't get discouraged early on. Carbs are the worst for me: pasta, potatoes, bread, I love them all. (And wine) Ooo, I think I'm hungry. Grabbing a carrot now.

Good luck with your plan but don't be too hard on yourself if you fall off occasionally. Bread is a comfort food. I remember fresh buns made by my mother and how we would practically inhale them. Now, alas, my hubby has learned to make the best buns! Moderation is the key.
